An appeal from Miriam Ross Campaign coordinator, Scotland Loves Nature
Scotland’s nature matters to all of us – but it is in crisis.
Our natural environment really matters. When nature is healthy, people are healthier and happier too. We depend on nature for everything from clean air and water to recreation, and access to nature can support our wellbeing and mental health.
Our environment supports our economy – industries like fishing, farming, and tourism all depend on nature. Scenery and landscape is by far the biggest driver of Scottish tourism, with 70% of visitors saying it was one of the reasons they chose Scotland.
But today, Scotland is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, and 1 in 9 species is at risk of extinction here.
The good news is that nature can recover. Across the country, people are working together to restore our fantastic wildlife and habitats – for example, creating places for nature to thrive within urban parks and greenspaces, planting new native woodlands, restoring degraded peatlands, planting seagrass and reintroducing native oysters.
But to help nature recover on a large scale, we need government action. The Scotland Loves Nature campaign calls on the Scottish government to:
Would you be willing to help us achieve these goals, for the sake of Scotland’s natural environment?
We are looking for funding to continue our campaign and would be very grateful if your business would consider donating.
Through our campaign, supporters sent more than 13,000 emails to Scotland’s MSPs last summer. The campaign met its first milestone in September when First Minister John Swinney committed to introducing the Natural Environment Bill by summer 2025.
Now we need to keep the pressure up. We need a bill with ambitious targets to restore Scotland’s nature, and we need all of Scotland’s politicians to make nature a priority as we approach the next Holyrood elections in 2026.
Support from local businesses like yours would mean so much to us in our campaign, which is about showing the Scottish government how much people all over Scotland care about nature.
