A new era of connectivity and sustainability begins in Perth today as First Minister John Swinney officially opens Destiny Bridge and the New Kingsway. This landmark infrastructure project is set to significantly enhance travel across the region, improve air quality, and promote more efficient transport routes.
The opening ceremony featured inspiring speeches from Councillor Grant Laing, Leader of Perth and Kinross Council, and Olympic medallist Eilidh Doyle, reflecting on the impact and significance of the project. They were joined by enthusiastic members of the local community, including Blairgowrie Ramblers, Perth Park Run runners, local cyclists, and students from Luncarty and RDM Scone Primary Schools, alongside Morris Leslie Cars representatives, who were among the first to experience the new bridge.
A Milestone for Perth’s Future
Speaking at the event, First Minister John Swinney highlighted the far-reaching benefits of the new infrastructure:
“The completion of the New Kingsway and Destiny Bridge is a significant milestone for Perth, and I have no doubt that it will be transformative for the area and bring enormous benefits to all who use it. Reducing traffic volumes in the city centre will make journey times quicker while also helping to reduce pollution, improve air quality, and free up road space for improved public transport.”
Enhancing Connectivity and Sustainability
The New Kingsway has been designed to reduce congestion, lower emissions, and improve traffic efficiency, all while supporting Scotland’s broader goals of economic growth, enhanced public services, and environmental protection. By alleviating city-centre traffic, the project will not only improve air quality but also create better conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.
Now Open to the Public
The New Kingsway and Destiny Bridge will be open to the public from mid-afternoon today, inviting residents and visitors to experience the improved transport links firsthand. This project is a testament to the power of strategic investment and collaboration, setting a new standard for infrastructure development in Scotland.
