Scottish Government Daily Update Thursday 17th December 2020

This update from the Scottish Government directs businesses to the most up to date information on COVID-19 as we move forward with our economic response.

The Find Business Support website continues to provide details on the assistance available as well as information and advice on how businesses can restart safely through and out of lockdown.

Today at First Minister’s Questions the First Minister re-emphasised guidance that the safest way to spend Christmas this year is for people to stay within their own household and in their own home and any interaction with another household should, if possible, be outdoors. However, if considered essential, meeting indoors with someone from another household should be limited both in duration and numbers as much as possible.

The First Minister also said she expected the latest estimate of the R number to have risen to around 1 instead of just below 1.

The UK Government has announced the furlough scheme has been extended until the end of April 2021 with the UK Government continuing to contribute 80% towards wages. The Chancellor also confirmed the extension of government-guaranteed COVID-19 business loan schemes until the end of March. More information is available here.

Statistics on COVID-19 business support fund grants including the number of awards granted and the value of these award have been updated.

The Scottish Government is providing additional expenditure of up to £29 million to help bus operators maintain services during the coronavirus pandemic. Read more here.

An action plan for ensuring Scotland’s workforce has the skills needed for the transition to a net-zero economy has been published for the first time. Skills Minister Jamie Hepburn said the plan puts Scotland on a pathway to world leading climate change targets as well as delivering a green recovery from COVID-19.

A new 12-point action plan has been developed to support Scotland’s ambition to be a world class fishing nation and ensure responsible and sustainable fisheries management.  Read more here

Safer workplace guidance is released on a sectoral basis and can be found here.  

Grants are available for businesses that are required by law to close or to significantly change operations as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. Find out who is eligible and how to apply here.
