Crieff care home residents receive heartwarming message from Dumfries schoolgirl as she maintains intergenerational links during Coronavirus Crisis

Residents at Balhousie Dalnaglar care home in Crieff have received a heartwarming message from the great-granddaughter of a former resident.

Nine-year-old Isla Goldie wanted to maintain contact with the home despite her great-grandfather, Jim Drysdale, passing away in February.

At home on her family’s farm during the lockdown, Isla wrote to say how much she had enjoyed visiting Balhousie Dalnaglar and that she was thinking of the residents during the Coronavirus Crisis. Her brother Thomas has also been writing to the home.

“I hope you are all keeping safe and feeling OK,” wrote Isla, who lives at Mouswald near Dumfries. “My mummy is teaching us from home. Yesterday I made soup and cupcakes and helped daddy on the farm with calves. We have lots of baby lambs and baby calves. Thank you for looking after my great grandpa.”

Isla’s mum Linda said: “Sadly, Isla’s great grandpa passed away in February but we decided to keep writing to his home as we know they can’t get any visitors just now and we wouldn’t like to think that we couldn’t have visited him.”

The award-winning Balhousie Care Group, which runs 26 care homes across Scotland, was one of the first care home operators to announce restrictions on non-essential visits to its facilities. Residents are communicating with relatives and friends through a variety of means, using new and traditional technology - including telephone and video calls, social media and letter-writing.

Jill Kerr, Group Chief Executive Officer at Balhousie Care Group, said: “It’s lovely to see these intergenerational links continuing for our care home residents, even throughout the lockdowns. We’re thrilled that Isla reached out to Dalnaglar in this way.”
