Catering to Celebrancy via Covid

How one entrepreneur forged a new career in the face of uncertainty

Many industries were hit hard by Covid lockdowns and restrictions. None more so than hospitality and catering, where businesses rely heavily on day-to day revenue from walk-in customers, but which didn’t receive the same government support as other sectors during the pandemic.

Andrew D Scott knows all about this. A well-regarded hospitality and catering entrepreneur based in Kinross-Shire, Andrew could only stand by and watch as his award-winning coffee shop, Heaven Scent in Milnathort, was forced to close its doors and his Victus Catering Consultancy clients dwindled away.

Andrew says:

“It’s just heart-breaking seeing the business you’ve built over years of hard graft stand empty. In fact, I celebrated Heaven Scent’s landmark birthday by myself in the coffee shop with a giant “15” balloon and a cup of tea. It was a far cry from the mini-festival event we had organised to thank our amazing staff and loyal customers.”

But never one to stand still for long, Andrew had a brainwave. Just before lockdown he had attended a wonderful wedding which had been perfect in every way except for the lacklustre celebrant. With his experience of creating memorable events and speaking at conferences, Andrew reckoned that with the right training and his positive, people-orientated attitude HE could be a celebrant.

“Covid forced me to stop and reflect. I guess celebrancy was something that had been on my mind for a while, especially with my track record in public speaking and delivering keynotes. My businesses coming to a standstill actually presented me with a great opportunity.”

So Andrew committed to the training, studied hard and passed with flying colours. A fortuitous bout of Covid and enforced self-isolation offered Andrew yet another chance to reflect and study, and he has now since qualified as a marriage officer as well as an independent celebrant.

Back to full health and with his other businesses thriving once again, Andrew is now making his mark on the Scottish wedding scene. Funny and irreverent, witty and warm, Andrew can be found in his kilt or tweed suit delivering highly personalised wedding, naming and vow renewal ceremonies up and down the country.
